When teaching yoga my aim is to create a
friendly, relaxed and safe environment in which students can let go of their everyday pressures and stresses, and allow themselves to enjoy the many benefits that yoga brings.
I believe that yoga is best taught in smaller groups making learning more
personalised
and tailored to each student’s specific needs. There is usually a
maximum
of 8 in a class so students can receive good individual attention. Students are urged to practice within their own capabilities, at their own pace and working in harmony with their body rather than pushing it to the absolute limit; in time and with patience their practice will grow.
My own yoga practice is influenced by
Iyengar (safe, progressive and
precise) and
Astanga Vinyasa (flowing, strong, dynamic and physical) yoga “styles”. I combine these styles in the adult sessions that I run, depending on the needs and experience of the students, whether
complete
beginners or intermediates.
My teaching focuses on correct alignment and the anatomy of each posture, from
the ground up. Postures are practised in stages (kramas) so that students can
find their own level. I encourage an awareness of the breath throughout the class
and use hands-on adjustments and props/supports to enable students to fully experience
their yoga.
All classes end with a period of relaxation and inward reflection allowing the body to absorb and settle with the effects of the yoga, and help the cultivation of an open and relaxed mind.
All necessary
equipment is provided (mats, blocks, belts), as well as a cosy blanket and lavender eye pillow for the end of practice relaxation!
